I’m sure Matt Nelson and I marched in many of the same protests, our hearts breaking over every precious life snuffed out, and our government’s funding of the most thoroughly-documented genocide in history.
Matt’s actions are an indication of how outraged we are that our representatives - who claim to want a ceasefire - still fail to act.
Repost from @pymboston:
On September 11th, 2024, Matt Nelson self-immolated outside the Zionist consulate in Boston. In a video posted that day, Matt declared that he was about to engage in an extreme act of protest declaring “We are all culpable in the ongoing genocide in Gaza” and urging the United States government to stop fueling the violence against Palestinians.
Matt is the third person to self-immolate in the US in protest of the genocide in Gaza. Like the airman Aaron Bushnell did in February 2024, and a protestor before him in Atlanta, Matt took a drastic measure in an attempt to make it impossible for those in power here to ignore the catastrophe that they are supporting in Palestine. Despite all attempts by the US government to isolate its culpability in the death of Palestinian people, Matt understands that this government is a co-conspirator in the crime of all crimes. We demand the media to cover his action for what it was - a protest of the American-Zionist genocide in Gaza.
Matt Nelson is still in critical condition, per initial reports. We send love and solidarity to him, and his family and friends, and wish him a speedy recovery.
While the war mongers and genociders lock arms, we must lock arms with each other: with those who have resisted this violence for decades and centuries. We must continue to resist together.
We underscore Matt’s demands: for the U.S.to cease sending money and weapons to Israel, for an immediate end to the genocide, and for accountability for all those complicit in colonial violence.

The school year was supposed to start in Gaza, but backpacks were replaced with water containers, and the path to school was replaced with the path to the water filling line.
Please help me save my family. Donate, share or reshare. I would be grateful. We see all kinds of death in Gaza and we die

// f/mab critical
i keep remembering the scene where king bradley is revealed to be wrath in brotherhood, aka when he says that he was fucking pissed at elicia crying for hughes during his funeral (something like his hands were shaking not bc of sadness, but bc he was angry), and how other characters are appalled by said reaction.
the way that scene is executed is so bad, like. it's so fucking cheesy, the word choice and the commotion, but i also dislike that wrath - not only the character but the sin itself - is resumed to this. that he just gets angry or annoyed at everything. they expect you to be shocked and repulsed that someone could ever get pissed at a grieving child, but it feels forced.
i'm very aware that character depth isn't bh's forte, but there are scenes where it tries to be emotional. some of them work (i think my favorite is when ed sees al's human body for the first time in years), but since it's a generic shounen that wants you to be interested in the plot more than anything, then most emotional moments don't rlly hit you, whether happily or tragically. the first episodes are worse, since bh expects you to have seen fma 2003 priorly, therefore hughes' and, dare i say, nina's deaths don't hurt that much, because you barely spent any time with these characters to grow any sort of attachment to them.
and even then, the actual emotional moments only focus on the white characters. the ishvalans are just there to validate their pain and their "goodness", and in turn scar is villainized for taking justice in his own hands. even in his backstory episode, after losing his brother, all his other loved ones and his people, he's gruesomely dehumanized in his state of grief, becoming a monster that then kills two innocent white doctors. and in the end, all of this is about winry's feelings, not scar's. this is about whether or not she'll forgive him, and not about the fact that he survived a fucking genocide.
brotherhood tries rlly fucking hard to be touching tale, a deep political commentary, and while it may be exciting, it ultimately doesn't deliver any of these things.

LUMINE HC OO2. ( my ) lumine and by extension aether are the last of their race. as explained in my 1st headcanon their planet was effectively destroyed, a civil war ending in mutual destruction that lumine and aether just barely escaped from. think planet krypton but superman wasn't, like, a newborn or whatever when he was shot off of the planet. a target due to their royal and celestial blood, lumine and aether were ushered off the planet. the two have travelled the cosmos and the stars, been unwilling witnesses to the creation and dying of stars in their 5000+ years of living and 2500 years of being away from home. they don't have a home anymore, becoming each others home as they are all they have - settling in one place is . . foreign to them, as is remaining somewhere for longer than a few hundred years at a time ( so lumine learning that her brother ??? has been on teyvat / as has she for 500 years is like. wild to her lmfao ).

Last night I went and did TikTok’s homework, since I couldn’t sleep:
So, since horror movies have a history of talking about social issues that regular media tends to ignore or skip over for at least a few years; I decided to make the underlining theme of Zepotha the erasure of marginalized communities, the forced integration into what is seen as “proper” by colonials through Native American “boarding schools”, and non-binary/gender-fluid people not being understood.
Warning: this is a horror movie
Our main character can be called Malinalli (name pending) or something similar (I don’t have TikTok, I don’t know what names they are using. She lives in Zepotha, a small town in the middle of nowhere where only shapeshifters live (can only turn into people). Some, like Malinalli, shift all the time; while there are those that tend to spend more time in one skin. (Added for the meme of “you look like x person!” to have a stronger punch, I mean there are 32 Lolas and 6 Jakes who represent the same character but look different). Malinalli in particular wears a set of white shirt and pants, but everyone wears white so it can contrast with the red blood when the killing starts.
At the end of the first act of the movie, after getting to know Zepotha, a shady government body of men in black uniforms show up at midday and start killing the civilians.
[we get a shot of the bodies in the field getting stepped on]
Malinalli (I seriously need to change the name) is now on the run.
We see her slowly shift less and less.
She finally stops running around sundown, her white clothes have been covered in so much blood and mud that they’re almost as dark as the attackers’. As the last rays of the sun dies, she kills one of the men and takes his skin and his clothes.
Until this point Malinalli has been everything else, woman, men, black, asian, latino, but never a clearly blond white man.
She is no longer herself, she is… him now.
And will probably always gonna be in order to survive

rhea's "rant" about uta and the uta uta no mi aka i have really big feels for this character and she lives in my head rent free
trigger warnings: mentions of pts, suicide, depression, anxiety, mind control, implied genocide, death
having a massive strong urge to review and kinda re-do the uta uta no mi for uta (along with 99% of what happened to her at the end + post film red) and essentially make her my OC™. i know oda wrote that "uta fades away" in the chronological timeline of film red, which is a very nicely put "lol she dead". not on my watch, sir.
she very much survives, the coffin conveniently covered with the red haired pirates' flag is just a show for the marines to hopefully leave her alone. uta recovers with the help of shanks and crew, but she suffers from night terrors, nightmares, pts, depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety and is fighting off addiction to wake-shrooms. she's scared to sing ever again because she has 0 control over her devil fruit and the only knowledge about it she has is a) it transports people to a happy place as long as she's awake, so of course her logic is to eat the wake-shrooms to stay awake for as long as possible (read: until she dies) so everybody is happy b) it sealed away Tot Musica, and the uta uta no mi can bring it back
and don't even get me started on the uta uta no mi. i really don't like how whenever she sings everybody is immediately transported to the uta world. i want uta to be able to sing without potentially causing another mind slave situation. you can't tell me there's not some kind of on/off switch for those powers. aka the uta uta no mi is stupidly overpowered without any balances iirc and i'm not here for it so the only thing i know to do is try and fix it so it makes more sense (at least to me)

Blood Meridian; or, the Evening Redness in the West (1985) - Cormac McCarthy
Rating: 10/10
Reading this novel was like being reminded that evil persists, exists, is stoked by the mechanisms that people before us have carefully or carelessly put into place, perpetuated by sons that learn only violence from their fathers, hoping for easy solutions, for another whiskey or another fuck, onward into infinity like dancing bears on a very vast and dusty stage made of wood planks with ancient blood pooled in its cracks.
Just like its subject - the scalp trade in the Borderlands - McCarthy’s writing here is difficult to digest, forces you to slow down and absorb the horrors in their entirety. He lists these in excruciating detail - the gang commits massacre after massacre, unnecessary violence against innocent people, violence against people who fight back, violence against the people who employed them in the first place. All of these horrors are both fictional and real, based upon the actions of a real-life figure and leader of said gang, John Joel Glanton and his mysterious right-hand man, the Judge.
Yet McCarthy chooses to focus on the Judge as representative of true evil; supernatural in appearance, actions and worldly knowledge, the Judge states that “Whatever exists in creation without my knowledge exists without my consent.” After he records it tidily in his journal, we see him snuff out centuries, millennia-old example of human art with one giant hand - a scene that struck me strangely hard, considering that we had just seen him kill countless people, had been implied to harm children in unspeakable ways, had played the gang like a cruel fiddle for nothing but nihilistic enjoyment. And yet he is symbolically an imperialist symbol, consuming everything since he seems to truly believe in nothing but the tune of war and games of chance. No judge in the sense of justice - he holds court only in bloodsport and bloodshed.
And yet we see The Kid, our true protagonist, also born with a propensity of violence, show mercy; he helps; he is moved; he is unswayed by the Judge’s simplistic philosophy couched in the words of a skilled orator. We see him move on and become The Man. We see him kill, still; but he warns, he attempts to rescue others, he wants nothing to do with the game. He quits it entirely. His soul remained intact, and what happens at the end of the book… only happened because the Judge knew no other way to subdue it. And I think that gives me hope.
—
Personal note: I finished this book over a VERY long stretch - give or take 6+ months - but it was worth it in the end. I’m not necessarily a fan of historical novels, nor epic works, but occasionally I work myself up to it. I’m looking to maybe read Cormac McCarthy’s The Road next now that I’m used to his meandering style. I’m curious to know what people think about this book too though I’m aware that it’s already been dissected to bits and pieces everywhere on the literary internet and in reading groups and in universities.
A must-read for people unfamiliar with extreme violence and conflict, or those who want to learn about the Borderlands at the time, or if you just want to read beautiful descriptions of disgusting violence and a gorgeous, unfeeling and dangerous landscape.

**Trigger Warning: genocide, child harm, implied CSA, Holocaust mention, gore**
He'd brought him to Conrad because he wanted to know, because he needed to know- To what extent.
"Well, I can only speculate, but-" William began, pinching the bridge of his nose tersely.
Words like 'multiple' and 'comorbid' and phrases like 'consistent only with long-term abuse' fell from the good doctor's lips like palettes of bricks and it was all far uglier than Knives had been expecting, but he didn't look away. He didn't stop listening. He didn't 'turn off' the way he oftentimes did when he would sit at the piano and play for hours on end.
His mind drifted back to the old footage of Earth, the skeletal encampment prisoners huddled in their blankets. Some went into shock from eating real food. The doctors had given them new clothes and cosmetics, things to gently remind them of their humanity and it all seemed like some sickeingly grotesque parody of normalcy.
After that, how could anything feel 'normal'? He didn't know.
Weakness meant death when you were just an animal (humans are animals).
The boy was made from hatred and fear and blood and he wasn't sure whose it was. The lumps of meat that used to be an obese city official, he'd seen the kid pick up a shard of glass tight between his little fingers and stab the end into it's eyes over and over- The head turned into a pincushion of broken rebar.
Behind his eyelids he can still see the villages ravaged by imperial soldiers in their stark red and white jumpsuits, the death marches, the children with no arms. Just waving stumps and begging- Not for money, but a bullet. Please. Just one bullet. Kill me.
Maybe he should pick up another slave kid before he does this, just so the boy wouldn't have to be alone, but why wait?
He's still asleep, wearing a old SEED crew uniform that Knives had given him. The same one he'd been wearing when he'd enacted his plan. He walks up without hesitation, claws forming from the knuckles of his left hand. He pulls his arm back.
He'd wanted to die anyway, it's not going to get much better from here on out. Some things just keep their hot-wire edge no matter how many times someone tells you 'it's over', that it's 'gone now'. Because acknowledging it was real meant that the darkening stains of the past made it so there was no point being alive in the present, much less some distant future.
He wants it out, but he can't get that image out of his head, the way he'd smiled when the sweep of the blade kissed his throat.
The blades retract once more and he took a step back. He tilts his head to the side in thought, then leaves, making sure to close the door quietly behind him.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow, there will be food and perhaps he will think of a proper name.

Speaking of Gaga, something I've found really strange is that, to the best of my knowledge, she hasn't said anything about Palestine or Israeli since... 2014? I know she's been a lot less active on social media recently, but she didn't even post a generic "that's sad :(" when Israel declared they were going to commit genocide openly war on Hamas? Like, she has not spoken about the situation at all. It seems to have bypassed her radar completely
#Lady Gaga#Palestine#Israel#I'm seeing people call her a 'full-blown Zionist'#which... I guess it's accurate to call her a Zionist?#but I also almost feel like that's implying that she's ever really. thought about Israel outside of her decision to perform there...#... and her experience doing so#(also: personally I take anything Gaga did or said at that time with a grain of salt)#(given how... well if you know you know)#(but she is still accountable to those things)#(and it's just... ugh)#don't get me wrong: passive/status-quo Zionism is still Zionism#but it's also not a very passionate stance? it's easy to break and abandon?#I don't even know what I'm getting at by this point#genocide tw#murder tw#death tw#racism tw#xenophobia tw#war tw#text heavy

Vent (This is more of a eulogy I think..)
CW: Genocide mentions, implied suicide
... Today would have been your seventeenth birthday...
...
I know you're gone but...
Happy birthday, Enaya... I realize now that I loved you in a way that I love my sister... You were like sister to me.
I wish I could say that I moved on now but... Prolonged Grief Disorder is a funny thing.
Not really though... Sometimes I find myself crying over the smallest things, but are they really small if they remind me of you?
I wish I could move on, but I was twelve, so were you.
...
Do you remember all the jokes we shared? And how we laughed at Zodiac signs?
You said to me "This is so inaccurate it's hilarious!"
...
The fourth of July marks the fifth anniversary of your death...
Funny... America gained independence on the fourth of July, and America's complicit in the genocide of your people, the Palestinians...
America's also committing genocide on my people, the Indigenous people...
If only the world had seen how much of a sweet soul you were...
You wanted to help people when you grew up, I remember.
I like to imagine, no, I know that if you were still here, you would actively be supporting Palestine, and telling people about Palestinian culture.
...
I'm going to the capitol tomorrow, I don't know if I'll break down.
I don't think I'll handle it well if a genocide supporter says something Islamophobic and racist...
Yet you'd want me to be strong.
...
"Don't blame yourself."
... That's what you wrote for me in your note...
I wish I could stop blaming myself... But how can I not?
Especially since I spent a long time trying to repress any memories of you.
Therapy seems to have dug up all my memories of you... I'm just glad I can talk about you now.
... Well, I guess I can't really tell my mom, she never made things easy, especially with all her trauma dumping...
...
Are you happy where you are? Are you safe? Are there plenty of Jaffa oranges?
I wish you were still here... I always thought one day we would be able to run around in a free Palestine.
...
Maybe in our next life...
And who knows, maybe we'll be sisters in that next life...
No matter what, I'll follow you, whenever that be in our next lifetimes or in the afterlife.
Happy birthday, Enaya... I miss you every day.
If it wasn't for you, I would have never known about Palestine, or how beautiful the culture was, I thank you. I'm glad that I knew you. I'm glad that I met you.
